Q & A with Katerina Ross!

Hello Katerina!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly with me today!  It’s such a pleasure to chat with you about your book Tenderly Wicked.  So tell me…

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?

I wanted to write controversial characters. Likeable, but flawed. So both men in my novel aren’t ideal. Max, an American expat in Moscow, finally plunges into exploring the world of BDSM after having repressed his desires for a long time. He’s nervous about his ineptness, and he makes a bunch of wrong decisions. One of my readers said she got very angry with him at some point. I was glad to hear that because you don’t get angry with someone who doesn’t seem to be real enough :) Vadim, Max’s Russian lover, is not a newbie in BDSM at all, but he has a history of abusive relationships, and it messed up his priorities a lot. Both Max and Vadim strive to make their relationship work, but there will be a lot of misunderstandings and angst.

Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?

My native language is Russian, but I couldn’t publish such a book in my own country – there are no M/M romance publishers at all in here, so I had to write it in a foreign language. I’m very proud I coped with this task, but also a bit sad because I can’t share this with most people I know. It’s not easy coming out as a writer of BDSM romances :)

Q) How much real life do you put into or influences your books?

I tried to give as many details on living in Moscow is possible, so readers could wander the Moscow streets with my characters and see how fascinating my home city is.

Q) What are your upcoming projects?

At the moment, I’m writing several M/M and M/M/F stories simultaneously. All of them are set in Russia.

Max has always been interested in the wicked ways of BDSM. Now he has Vadim, an eager Russian sub willing to fulfill his most daring fantasies. But there’s one problem—Max isn’t quite ready to accept what's right in front of him. His deep-seated insecurities threaten to spoil what's growing into more than just a kinky pastime.

Excerpt

Vadim stood in the middle of the room, his gaze wandering in the direction of a double bed, and Max slowly circled him, eyeing his guest appreciatively in what he hoped to be a slightly unnerving manner—hands clasped easily behind his back, bare feet stepping soundlessly across a green carpet with thick, dense woolen pile, the only decoration in the studio, clearly bought by the owners in an attempt to make the rental apartment seem more homely. It felt soft and pleasantly ticklish.
“Before we begin, tell me your safeword,” Max said at last, satisfied with his survey.
Vadim winced, as if annoyed. “Is it really necessary?”
Well that was a surprise. Max had always thought a safeword, slovo in Russian, was essential to every BDSM community. As far as he could tell from weeks of night chatting, there was no exception to this formality in Moscow. Why would Vadim be reluctant to use one?
Max stopped directly in front of him, in his personal space, and let out a slow smile, not exactly threatening but still dangerous. At least he thought so. He’d been practicing it in the mirror for a long, long time. “I’m going to establish some ground rules here,” he said in a low voice. “When I give you an order, you obey me. Instantly. If you don’t, I’ll have to assume you misunderstand your position and think you have some control left. Then I’ll have to correct your flawed reasoning in the most visceral way possible. Is it clear enough?”
“Yes,” Vadim whispered after a small pause.
“Good.” Max unclasped his hands and traced down Vadim’s left cheek and then his throat with a finger. Vadim shivered under the touch. “Show me you can be obedient then. Give me your safeword.”
“Red.” Vadim’s voice hitched when Max brought his thumb across the young man’s smoothly-shaved chin and touched his plush bottom lip.
“That will do,” Max confirmed. A reasonable choice for playing with a stranger, an international safeword code. It was like traffic lights, easy to remember. Red for stop, yellow for a breather. “Ready to begin?”
“I thought we had already,” Vadim murmured cheekily, eyes now closed halfway, shaded by long eyelashes, and lips wantonly parted as Max kept stroking his chin. But he gasped and his eyes fluttered open when Max squeezed it sharply, drawing him in for a quick harsh kiss that vaguely tasted of coffee and cigarettes and then let him go. “Now we have.”

Interview with Nancy Glynn

Hello, Nancy!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly with me today!  It’s such a pleasure to chat with you.  So tell me…

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
In And Never Let Her Go, my MC, Erin, is strong and independent and has decided to live alone after realizing something about herself that she feels no man will want. She’s sadly mistaken and learns she has more to give than the broken part of her. Slade is a man racked with guilt because of his love for his late brother’s old girlfriend. He never gives up on her and goes after her after the tragic event of his brother’s suicide. Slade needs to bring her a letter written by his brother after he finds him. He’s a former Marine, which gives him the strength to do this. I love writing intense characters and giving them depth.

Q) Is this book part of a series?  If so, can you tell us about it?
It is but as a standalone set in the same town (Town of Destiny). I write about different couples with intricate situations that’ll have you guessing to the end. I love adding suspense to my stories and getting the reader to turn the pages. I’m currently working on books 3 and 4 concurrently.

Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
And Never Let Her Go is set in my hometown Plainfield and have my characters sit at the outdoor cafés in our downtown. I love to work in the crazy weather we have here in Illinois and have used storms to help my couple along, especially tornadoes.

Q) What gave you the inspiration for your book?
Women or even men who don’t feel they’re good enough inspired this story. People who have deep flaws and conquer them, embracing their so-called brokenness and giving the gifts they do have. Erin and Slade conquer their flaws. The part where it’s an ex-boyfriend’s brother came to me because with old boyfriends, there was always that younger brother who had a crush on me, so wove that into my story, ha!

Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
Not really. I just open my Word document and start writing. I’ve burned candles and cut my nails because I hate typing with nails, but mostly just see my story and get lost. I forget all time and space when I’m in that zone. Just ask my husband and kids!

Q) Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?
I really don’t plan. A story will just come to me and I write that first scene. I write a soft outline to choose my characters’ names, ages, and backgrounds so I know who they are, but that’s it. The story I’m writing now I honestly feel is writing itself. I’m trying to keep up as fast as I can with the scenes that pour into my mind. I have no idea how it’ll end, but know it’ll be a happy ending and complete without any continuation.

Q) How much real life do you put into or influences your books?
The town is my real hometown, but the characters are fictional. In my recent release, And Never Say Goodbye, it is based on my husband’s job as an organ recovery coordinator. It’s based on his organization and how the process unfolds. He surgically removes the organs, so I needed his help for all the OR portions, so that book has a lot of factual information. There are sad donor stories in there that would happen in real life. Other than that, I think my characters are a mixture of me and people I know.

Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I’m currently working on the 3rd book, And Never Give Up Hope, and the 4th, And Never Close Your Heart, two very emotional stories consistent with my other two books. I like to go for the emotional gut of the reader plus give an intense love story with some suspenseful secrets. I’m hoping to get them published January/February. I believe fans of my Town of Destiny Series will be pleased with these new stories and will love my new couples, at least I hope!

WIP IT UP Wednesday - Works in Progress

Do you like Bikers?
Badass motorcycle riders with tats and the attitude to go with it?
Then you might like The Forgotten Rebels.  They’re a motorcycle club who requires its members to
do a stint in the military before full membership is given.  In Unbroken (book 1), the President’s sister comes live with the club when her family is gunned down by a psycho stalker. In Wicked Man (book 2), the President, Wick, meets up with his old flame even though she’s still on the run.

At the end of the book 2, one of the members, Heart, is visiting his aunt when he crashes his bike.  Book 3 is titled Take Aim and Reload.  Heart is taken in by an angel, a beautiful woman named Cherry who nurses him back to health.  Cherry, however, has her own trouble that she’s running from.
Here is a little excerpt from the beginning of Take Aim and Reload:

Cherry banged on the door to her sister’s mechanic shop, fear forcing her to glance over her shoulder to make sure she hadn’t been followed.  Only the chirping of crickets could be heard but that didn’t alleviate her terror.  Again, she pounded on the door and this time she heard the grumble of her sister tromping through the closed shop and relief poured through her.  Church would help her, would know what to do. A second later, the light flicked on as the door abruptly opened.  Her sister, Church, stared at her through eyes identical to her on, in a face that was a mirror copy.
“What the fuck, Cherry?” Church demanded, her small frame seemingly able to fill the doorway.
“Let me in, Church,” she said, a bit of desperation threading through her voice.  “I’m in trouble.”
Instantly, her sister’s anger disappeared and she stepped back to allow Cherry entrance.  As she hurried inside, Church closed the door behind her and doused the light.  Even though it was the dead of night, a sliver of moonlight filtered through the windows, allowing them to stare at one another.  Church placed her hands on her hips.
            “What’s going on?”
Cherry dug through her pocket and pulled out a flash drive.  “I-I got it.”
            Church shrugged.  “Got what?”
            “Proof.  On Cabot Pharmaceuticals.”
For a moment Church stared at her, the concern melting away to dawning realization.  “You…what?”
“Remember when I told you that I thought the CEO was being shady?”
            Church nodded warily.
            “I-I broke in tonight.”
            “You did what?”
“I had to, Church.  I had to ease my concerns.  So I broke into Warren’s office and got into his computer.”
“Wait, wait, wait.” Church held up her hands.  “You broke into Warren’s office?  You mean your boss, Warren Cabot, the president of the pharmaceutical company?”
            Cherry nodded.
“Oh my God.  And you hacked your way into his computer-”
            “Actually, I knew the password.”
“Okay, but you?  You did something illegal?”
Cherry could understand her sister’s disbelief.  Their entire lives had been shadowed by the fact that they’d been grossly misnamed, with Cherry being the good girl and Church rebelling against every rule.
“I-I had to do something,” she said.  Silently she cursed her stutter that always manifested whenever she was stressed.  “We’re the biggest pseudoephedrine pharmaceutical company in the mid-west and I-I just knew he was brokering some type of underhanded bad deals.”
“I’m not quite sure how I feel about this,” Church said, smirking a bit. “This role reversal is kinda freaking me out.”
“Stop it,” Cherry said sharply.  “I-I didn’t get away scot free.”
Church’s teasing nature dropped away and she glanced behind Cherry to the door.  “Someone caught you?”
“The head of security saw me.”
A myriad of emotions crossed over her sister’s face as the repercussions filtered through her head.  “If he knows you then he knows about me.”
            Cherry nodded.
“Well, fuck!” Church threw her hands up in the air and turned away.  “God damn it, Cherry, why couldn’t you just keep your fucking nose out of their business?”
“I-I couldn’t do that and you know why.”  Cherry twisted her fingers together. “They’re selling it to gangs who make meth and in return, they get a kickback from the club.  They’re putting the drugs directly in the hands of kids, Church.  Kids just like Ricky.”
Church rubbed a hand over her face.  “Yeah.  Alright. You don’t need to talk about him.”
Cherry laid a hand on her sister’s arm.  “Yes, I do.  We can’t forget about him.”
Suddenly, a loud explosion erupted through the night.  Glass shattered. Something smashed into the wall next to her head and the next thing Cherry knew, Church yanked her down.
            “Holy shit!”

Jacey Holbrand Brings a Twist on Alien Abduction

~ * ~ The Q & A ~ * ~

Q) Can you tell us about your series?
A) Originally The Agency series was supposed to be a bunch of different stories following different peoples’ dealings with paranormal and supernatural activities. But that changed with the writing of the second story. Turns out one character stumbled across what he believed to be a conspiracy theory. The series ended up revolving around him, his friends/co-workers, and their plights in dealing with a scary clown-rabbit looking alien race. Of course, there’s also lots of male-male goodness and love in the air in each book.
Q) Can you give a fun or interesting fact about your book?
A) Abductions are not always about "collecting DNA" or experimenting as many people think. Instead, it's often about creating incredible terror in abductees and harvesting the energy of that terror.(*) Which Zen learns first hand in The Encounter. (*:http://www.rense.com/general82/unpl.htm)
Q) What gave you the inspiration for your series?
A) I originally wrote The Encounter for an anthology call where an alpha boss was to be paired with an assistant. When the story was requested to be expanded so it could be published separate from the anthology, I then came up with the series idea I first envisioned, as I stated above.
Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
A) Going for a walk helps to clear my mind, get the blood and thoughts flowing, and give my muse a happy boost. Brainstorming with a close friend of mine who is also a writer; listening to music; finding a quiet place to reflect helps to get me in the right frame of mind as well.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
A) I’m revamping a story that I’d submitted for an anthology that was out-right rejected. Then I’ll be writing two more stories in that new series. I’m leaning toward self-publishing those. I’ve been poking at a spin off series from The Agency that will be more sci-fi/romance based. In addition, I have several taboo stories to do last edits on, then I’ll format and self-pub those. I also have a bunch of projects under my other pen name, so I’ll probably be focusing my attention there for a while as well.

~ * ~ The Books ~ * ~

Story 1
The Encounter

Blurb:
Evan ‘Zen’ Zenas is the top agent at The Agency and is known for his brusque demeanor. He’s also known to be tough on trainees. Those who find themselves under his tutelage usually don’t last long. When he’s assigned a new assistant, Seth Trivos, Zen’s faced with questions about his past he’s not too keen on answering.
Seth Trivos knew Evan once upon a time, loved him even, but when Evan disappeared, he unknowingly broke Seth’s heart. Now, he’s in Evan’s world as the newest recruit at The Agency, and he’s looking for answers.
Will Zen chase away another new assistant because he doesn’t want to open up about a past encounter or will being forced on a case together make him face the demons he’s been trying to hide from?
Be Warned: m/m sex
Snippets:
*** Desire rushed through Seth, clawing at his insides. Zen clutched at him like a drowning man scrambling for purchase on any floating thing to save him from the watery depths. ***
*** Seth had such a great soul. There was still a part of him, though, that felt he didn’t deserve Seth’s attention, love, or understanding. That is, if Seth loves me. ***

Story 2
Breeding Seth

Blurb:
Evan Zenas and Seth Trivos had a tumultuous start to their relationship which has finally mellowed out. But now, something is wrong with Seth. Concerned for his health, Evan convinces his boyfriend, Seth, to see the doctor, and the prognosis is alarming.
Seth is pregnant.
The mystery is how.
Not only is their relationship at stake due to the life altering news so is Seth's life.
Be warned: m/m sex, anal sex, mpreg, public exhibition
Snippets:
*** The thought of Evan’s sturdy body holding and supporting his while they took each other up against the rocks in the heat of the day, the sun beating on their bare bodies, sent his heart fluttering like he was an inexperienced teen. ***
*** So far, the tryst was living up to his fantasy. The sun toasting his skin. The air teasing his body. Completely naked in public with the chance of getting caught. ***

Story 3
Cooper’s Condition

Blurb:
Cooper Hanes has met the love of his life, Doctor Micha Levi, and the chemistry between them is instant and hot. Yet life takes a turn when they go on a fateful trip.
Alien abduction. Experimentation.
Cooper’s left to deal with the greatest challenge of the ordeal.
Being pregnant.
Can their lives and love survive the aftermath of the encounter and the changes that come with Cooper’s condition?
Be warned: m/m sex, anal sex, mpreg, public exhibition. A gay erotic sci-fi story.
Snippets:
*** Micha’s expressions were so flirtatious and seductive, Cooper’s knees weakened for a moment, but he was able to gather his wits in spite of his raging libido causing him to go all moony eyed. ***
*** When the doctor shook his hand, a pinch of electricity bit into Cooper’s palm. The sexual magnetism he felt between them intensified. ***

Story 4
Mason’s Mijos

Blurb:
... He’ll do anything for love.
Mason Diaz is shocked when he sees his two ex-boyfriends, Flynn Grayson and Ryker Gemmings, together and at an alien encounters support group. Old feelings for them resurface when they tell Mason they want a threesome relationship. Eager to rekindle the connections, Mason goes up to Flynn’s house in the mountains for the weekend of a lifetime with the two men.
Abductions. Food play. Secrets and confessions about alien origins and shifting.
It’s not exactly what Mason had expected.
Especially the pregnancies.
Can he continue to love each of them while trying to survive the life changing events and all the revelations the weekend has in store?
Be Warned: MPREG, m/m sex, menage sex (MMM), food play, rimming, double penetration, voyeurism
Snippets:
*** Mason kissed Flynn’s knuckles on one hand then the other. “And I love you. That’s what I decided. Who you are on the inside is what matters. Not where you come from or what you can do. I. Love. You. What can I do to help you with your mission? Find a woman for you to knock up? I’m sure my sister has some friends who’d be interested in you.” ***
*** Mason inwardly sighed. Having their lips meet was like coming home after a long vacation. Flynn hadn’t lost his touch in the art of kissing. He molded into Flynn’s body as if no time had ever passed, each dip and plane remembering how they fit into Flynn’s. ***

Love...with a Ghostly Twist

Let me introduce you to Charlotte Perth...

Charlotte is all about sass because her job reminds her all too well the limits of human life.  You see, she can talk to ghosts, but her gift is unique. She can only summon murdered souls and interprets the visions they send her.  When she’s hired by a wealthy woman to determine the fate of her great nephew, little does Charlotte realize this is one ghost that refuses to cross over.

Detective Jonas Daire feels Charlotte is a fake, out to swindle money from his rich aunt.  When Charlotte proclaims the nephew is not only dead but has been murdered, Jonas feels especially disgusted at Charlotte’s “profession”.  But when his cousin’s body is discovered in the place that she said it would be, with detailed accounts of how he died, he places her under suspicion.

Jonas and Charlotte work together to find the killer.  As the two grow closer together, another malevolent force won’t stop until the truth is buried…until Charlotte’s ghostly visions are her own.

This is Book One!

Book Two features the second love of Charlotte's life, Agent Nash McKnight!

Charlotte Perth has been sent to Missouri to find the bodies of three missing women and she’s dragging her injured new boyfriend, Jonas Daire, along for the ride.  Only when she arrives in Rock Ridge does she realize that Agent Nash McKnight has been hired to protect her, and his nearness is driving her absolutely crazy.

As if having to deal with a wacky Southern Belle who’s channeling more than the dearly departed, the local sheriff who’s convinced she’s the murderer, and an underground sex club wasn’t challenging enough.  Now she’s got to worry about her unwanted attraction to Nash as they go undercover to ferret out a killer.

Charlotte doesn’t want to betray Jonas, but she’s not quite sure how to squash her feelings for Nash.  And just when she thought she might have it all figured out, a secret she uncovers is enough to put her on the murderer’s high priority list.

Book Three brings them all together in one wacky menage relationship!

Leaving the troubling dilemma of loving two men behind, Charlotte Perth heads home to California.  The last time she was there she’d just come back from the dead with the gift of being clairvoyant.  Now, another young swimmer has drowned and Charlotte realizes it’s another victim…one that might not have been if she’d only told the truth twelve years earlier.

She doesn’t count on Jonas and Nash following her, ready to hammer out the details of being in a ménage relationship.  Both love her so they’re willing to share, as long as they don’t kill each other first.  Only now they have to convince stubborn Charlotte they can make the unusual relationship work.

Before she can possibly think of the future, however, she’s got a murder to solve while not falling victim twice to the same killer…one who’s waited a very long time for Charlotte to come home.

ABOUT BETH

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box.  I love writing characters who are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.

I’ve been pretty fortunate in life to experience some amazing things.  I’ve lived in France, travelled throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  I am a mom to an amazing little boy.  I’ve walked a red carpet event and visited the USS Voyager. I hate washing dishes but I love cooking. I hate washing clothes but I love wearing them. Writing my bio is difficult because I never know what to say so I hope you like this one.  My favorite color is red but I look best in black (it’s slimming).  I hate people who don't pick up their dog's crap in public places, people who don’t use turn signals, and I really hate people who are rude and condescending. I especially hate discrimination in all and every form.  And although I love holding a book in my hand, I absolutely adore my ereader, whom I’ve named Ruby.  I love to hear from readers so I’ve made it really easy to find me on the web:

jompexcerpt

"Holy shit..."
I turned to see what Lowe was looking at and my jaw dropped. She was here. In the bar.
Kennedy was here.
But she... didn't look like Kennedy.
Gone was the innocent little beauty I'd fallen for, and then lost. This girl was confident. Wild. She oozed sex. From the corset top she wore to the frayed denim miniskirt and high heeled booties. Her hair was blown out and luxurious, like she was in a shampoo commercial. Her pouty lips were shiny and red. Her stunning eyes were lined with something dark and smokey.
She was hot. She was sex on wheels. And she was already getting way too much attention.
Her cousin Jamie smirked at me. I knew that she'd done this to spite me. To torture me.
To get even with me for being a damn jackass.
And it was working.
I growled and slammed my drink down. I strode across the bar and grabbed Kennedy's arm. Then I dragged her right back outside.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?"
She squeaked as I released her. I stood there, panting as she looked at me in shock.
"Drew... I didn't know you would be here."
"Like hell you didn't!"
"Jamie said I needed to get out. So, we're out."
"Go home, Kennedy! I don't want you here!"
Her gorgeous eyes blinked at me. Then she blinked again. I stared at the solitary tear that rolled down her cheek.
I ran my hands through my hair.
"Kennedy... shit, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that."
She pulled her purse tight over her shoulder and shook her head.
"No, it's fine. I should have realized Jamie was up to something. We'll just... I'll go somewhere else."
I stared at her, my jaw clenching.
"You should go home. You're going to start a damn riot! Why are you dressed like that? What are you trying to do to me?"
She squared her shoulders and tossed her hair over her shoulder.
"Nothing. I'm leaving. Like you said. Tell- tell Jamie I'll see her at PJ's."
"PJ's! Hell, no you are not going to PJ's alone!"
She gave me a cold look.
"I don't see that it's any of your concern. I have a sitter. I'm an adult. I can go anywhere I damn please!"
I snarled at her, taking a step towards her.
"No, you can't."
"Yes. I can."
She was trying to sound tough but she took a step backwards.  I followed her until her back was against the wall. She gave me a nervous look. Good.
She should be nervous.
"No. You can't."
I was inches away from her. I could practically taste her lips. She always reminded me of strawberries and cream. I wanted to see if she still tasted like that.
I wanted to see if the fire was still burning between us.
That was a lie.
I knew it was.
Even after everything she'd done, I could not resist her. I'd tried to stay away. And I'd failed.
